Red campion (Silene dioica) is a biennial or short-lived herbaceous perennial plant of woodland glades, old hedgerows and roadside verges. Here in Owler Car Wood, within the Moss Valley Nature Reserve, Northeast Derbyshire, it grows on the sunniest slopes. It flowers between May and October, dependent on light levels, and is a food plant for bees, butterflies and hoverflies.
