birch, deadwood and bluebells, ecclesall woods, may 2019

Ecclesall Woods in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, is well-known for its displays of bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) every spring. Here they are growing under birch (Betula spp.), an open-crowned tree that allows plenty of light to reach plants on the woodland floor.Ê This part of the woods is managed through conservation coppicing, which assists wildflower regeneration.
